The Sassafras Three
a frontier fairy folktale
"The Sassafras Three" is something of a western frontier fairy folktale. In its pages lurk witches, dragons, pig farmers, Jackrabbits, rattlesnakes, kings, and magic.
When a dusty wind-devil steals the hat off an old man's head, the old man sets out on a journey to take his hat back. Along the way he is involuntarily joined by Nash Irving, famed hunter and hill-ranger. Nash is on a quest of his own, to slay the cruel dragon in the eastward swamp. This journey takes all involved over desert, prairie, hill, wood, bog, and lake. It is a story of humor, darkness, terror, endurance; of good and evil, of silliness and mystery. Complete with 49 pen-and-ink illustrations, "The Sassafras Three" is an adventurous book well worth reading, whether you're a kid, a family, or an adult.
